 JUDO

 ?

What is JUDO?

Judo is a world-renowned martial art founded in Japan by Kanō Jigorō. While it is a dynamic Olympic sport where victory is achieved through masterful throws and strategic groundwork, it is also a traditional Budo (Martial Way) focused on character development.

Rooted in Samurai heritage, Judo emphasizes a unique spirituality and strict etiquette. At Ni-Ten Judo Club, we teach the core principles of Seiryoku-Zenyo (Maximum Efficiency) and Jita-Kyoei (Mutual Welfare and Benefit). Since 1974, our mission has been to use the discipline of the tatami to forge not only strong athletes but also respectful and resilient individuals in the Fort McMurray community.

Is Judo Right for Children?

Judo is a comprehensive physical and mental activity, providing a structured environment for children as young as age 3. At Ni-Ten Judo Club, we focus on more than just the sport; we teach Ukemi (the art of falling safely) to build coordination and prevent injuries in daily life.

Rooted in Samurai tradition, Judo instills discipline and respect that naturally carries over to school and home. By learning to fall and get back up, children develop a "can-do" attitude and inner strength. Beyond total body fitness, our mission since 1974 has been to teach children not just how to throw, but how to stand tall in life.

How is Judo played?

In Judo, the ultimate goal is to achieve "Ippon"—a decisive victory. This is accomplished by throwing an opponent with control and force, or through groundwork such as pins and submissions. While rooted in tradition, Judo is a premier Olympic sport that has been evolving for over a century, continuously refining its rules as a modern global competition.

With a structured system of age and weight divisions, it offers a fair and challenging platform for everyone from young beginners to elite competitors. This evolution ensures that while we honor our history, we embrace the speed and athleticism of the 21st century.

Why Judo as a Competitive Sport?

Judo is a world-renowned Olympic sport celebrated for its dynamic technique and strategic depth. Because it utilizes a structured system of weight classes and age divisions, it provides a fair and competitive stage for everyone. Whether it is a top athlete aiming for the world stage or a child seeking their first milestone of success, Judo offers a unique platform to build confidence. At Ni-Ten, we empower students to set goals and overcome challenges, experiencing the true thrill of achievement within a safe and disciplined environment.

What are Spirit and Etiquette?

Judo’s spirit is rooted in Samurai tradition, following the refined etiquette of the Ogasawara-ryu. Every bow in our dojo reflects this ancient heritage of respect.

Our founder, Kanō Jigorō, championed "Jita-Kyoei" (Mutual Welfare and Benefit)—the belief that true strength comes from cooperation and lifting others up. At Ni-Ten, we don’t just train athletes; we build character that lasts a lifetime.
