The Road of Judo

From Japan to Canada

The Origin: The Path of "Do" (1882–)

In 1882, Kanō Jigorō founded Judo at the Kodokan in Tokyo.

He transformed ancient jujutsu into a "Way" (Do)—a path for self-improvement and social contribution. Built on the principles of Seiryoku-Zenyo (Maximum Efficiency) and Jita-Kyoei (Mutual Welfare and Benefit), the road of Judo began its journey from a small dojo in Japan to the rest of the world.

The Global Milestone (1964)

The road reached a historic peak in 1964, when Judo was introduced as an official Olympic sport at the Tokyo Games. This solidified Judo’s position as a global martial art, bridging the gap between Eastern tradition and international sportsmanship.

Crossing the Ocean: The Legacy of Hiroshi Nakamura (1968)

The road to Canada was paved in 1968 with the arrival of Master Hiroshi Nakamura. Settling in Montreal, he brought the authentic gold standard of Japanese Judo to Canadian soil. His relentless dedication produced Olympic medalists and established the high-quality lineage that defines Canadian Judo today.

The Road Reaches Fort McMurray (1974–Present)

In 1974, this long and prestigious road finally reached the Wood Buffalo region. Ni-Ten Judo Club was established as the first and oldest martial arts home in Fort McMurray.

For over 50 years, we have walked this road, preserving the techniques of Master Nakamura and the philosophy of Master Kanō. Today, we continue to lead the way, ensuring that the "Road of Judo" in Fort McMurray remains First in History, Foremost in Quality.
